World Cycling League Partners with Entercom Philadelphia to Launch New Philadelphia Cycling Team

October 7, 2019: The World Cycling League has joined forces with Entercom Philadelphia stations B101, KYW Newsradio 1060, SportsRadio 94 WIP, 98.1 WOGL, Talk Radio 1210 WPHT & 96.5 TDY to help develop the Philly Lightning, an elite men’s and women’s criterium and track racing team that will promote regional cycling and build awareness for WCL’s National Velodrome Sports, Entertainment and Conference Center being planned for the Philadelphia area.

The Lightning’s 2020 team of up to ten elite male and female international cyclists will compete around the country in some sixty men’s and women’s criterium and velodrome races during the April through September season. In addition to racing in top annual regional events in West Chester, Wilmington, Reading, the Lehigh Valley and throughout the tri-state area, the Lightning will travel to many top U.S. races and attend selected charity rides with Philadelphia sports teams and sponsors.

Stephan Hall from Perth, Australia and Anita Yvonne Stenberg from Drammen, Norway will captain the men’s and women’s teams, respectively. Hall, 29, is one of the world’s top all around cyclists with over 200 race victories in Asia, Australia, Europe and the United States. Stenberg, 27, has won 50 Norwegian National Championship titles and is a top candidate for Norway’s 2020 Olympic Team.

Team leadership will be rounded out by Mike Chauner, 33, from West Chester, PA who is an 18 year veteran of international teams in the Netherlands, Sweden and the USA. All three were members of the PA Lightning, the team that won World Cycling League’s 2016 premiere in California. Additional team members will be recruited from throughout the world and announced early next year.

Hall, who will return to the U.S. in April after a winter of indoor Six Day racing in Europe, Asia and Australia, has high aspirations for the Philly Lightning next season. “We expect both our men’s and women’s teams to be a dominate force in U.S. racing, particularly in the big money races against the best riders on the national criterium circuit,” he said.

As the Lightning’s media partner, Entercom Philadelphia has the ability to reach and engage nearly 3 million weekly listeners with its award-winning radio stations, digital platforms and events. Entercom will work with the team and its sponsors to provide monthly, season-long promotional inventory and participation by the Lightning in a variety of community events.
